Is it safe with / for ?Updated a year ago

As Digestive EQ and Digestive RP include ingredients specifically designed to address gut health, it should be safe to feed alongside most other feeds and supplements.

You may find that by feeding Digestive EQ or Digestive RP, and Digestive VM, your horse may not need additional supplements. For example, Digestive EQ and Digestive RP contain a good amount of calcium, magnesium and a toxin binder; so if you are already feeding another supplement with those in it, you may find you can cut it out.

Please note that our supplements are not complete feeds, and should be paired with a balanced diet and adequate amounts of forage. If you need help creating a balanced diet for your horse, check out our free Feed Assist program: Feed Assist AUS, Feed Assist NZ.

In the meantime here are some most commonly asked questions:

With Gastric Ulcer Medication...

Most ulcer medications prescribed by veterinarians aim to restrict hydrochloric acid production (known as proton pump inhibitors) in the stomach. A reduction of hydrochloric acid secretion allows the stomach environment to somewhat neutralise and allow ulcers to heal. These medications only target ulcers within the stomach, therefore if you are not seeing any improvement in your horse’s symptoms which may include girthiness, loose manure, poor performance, dull coat, weight loss and colic, your horse may also have further issues in their hindgut which remain unresolved.

Digestive EQ and Digestive RP aim to support all levels of digestive health from the foregut to the hindgut.

Digestive EQ and Digestive RP do not treat or prevent gastric or colonic ulcerations, but it may help to maintain gastrointestinal health by reducing insult of gastric fluid on a healing or recently healed gut, provide the nutrients the gut itself needs to repair the gut wall and produce mucous so it can protect itself naturally. Many of our customers are reporting that they have successfully weaned their horses off long-term use of gastric ulcer treatments since starting them on Digestive EQ or Digestive RP and scopes have remained clear.

If you suspect your horse has gastric ulcers, call your veterinarian. They should be able to properly diagnose stomach ulcers via a gastroscopy and determine if your horse requires treatment with a prescription medication.

Remember to always seek veterinary advice when concerned about your horse’s health.

With a Toxin Binder...

In Australia, our Digestive EQ and Digestive RP already contain a dual-action mycotoxin binder, Elitox. So you don't need to feed an additional binder.

At times of high mycotoxin exposure such as during spring, it is perfectly safe to add additional toxin binder if you wish to, such as our EquiBind.

Is it safe for Laminitic horses?

All our products are safe for laminitis-prone horses, and contain no grain, by-products, or molasses.

Digestive EQ and Digestive RP promote a diverse gut microbiome, aiding hormone regulation and reducing laminitis risk. If your horse is actively laminitic, stabilize it first, then gradually introduce these supplements.

EquiBind is also extremely low in Non-Structural Carbohydrates (0.9%) and all other ingredients are also safe for laminitics.

MetaboLize was designed with Laminitis in mind, helping horses manage and process sugar so this is perfect for those insulin dysregulated ponies and horses.

Research suggests a link between Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS) and microbial diversity in the gut. Encourage microbial diversity by providing diverse forages, reduce grain intake (if laminitis is caused by carbohydrate overload) and consider a gut health supplement like Digestive EQ or Digestive RP alongside a low-starch, low-sugar, high-fiber diet. Use MetaboLize if you think your horse is insulin dysrelugated and has signs of fatty lumps.

Always consult your vet for guidance.

With Oxalate Grasses?

Oxalate grasses can make formulating the perfect diet a bit tricky.

Digestive EQ and Digestive RP contain a good amount of calcium for this very reason, along with the fact that they act as an immediate pH buffer for the stomach. Some of our customers find that their horses’ calcium requirements are met with Digestive EQ or Digestive RP and a biscuit of lucerne hay alone.

A great way to find out whether Digestive EQ or Digestive RP is helping your horse meet its calcium requirements would be to have a look at our free Feed Assist program: Feed Assist AUS, Feed Assist NZ
