How to introduce and feed Digestive EQUpdated a year ago

Digestive EQ comes in a pale grey powder that is added to your horses feed supplement. You can mix it with oils, add to your wet feeds such as beet fibre, or mix through your feed and wet down.

How Do I Introduce Digestive EQ to my horse?

It is best practice to introduce all new feeds and supplements into a horse’s diet over a period of 14 days. This is particularly important for horses prone to digestive disturbances like colic and diarrhoea. What we suggest is:

  • Days 1 to 4 - ¼ recommended serve
  • Days 5 to 8 – ½ recommended serve
  • Days 9 to 12 – ¾ recommended serve
  • Day 13 on – full recommended serve

You can also provide extra support when introducing Digestive EQ by giving your horse the recommended dose of Stress Paste for the first few days too.

If you feel your horse needs a period of more intensive support, once the full serve has been achieved and your horse is eating it and there have been no unlikely negative changes e.g. loose manure, you can increase the serve by 1 extra scoop for 2 weeks (maximum), then return to maintenance serve. Alternatively, and our preference, would be to feed Stress Paste twice a day for up to 5 days. Stress Paste can help during extra stressful events such as travelling, competition, worming and other events such as diarrhoea or loss of appetite.

If you find ¼ serve is too much to start with you can begin at one teaspoon per day and gradually increase.

Can The Full Digestive EQ Serve Be Fed In One Meal?

Yes, but ideally it is best to feed Digestive EQ in two feeds per day. Doing this gives your horse longer periods of buffering in the stomach and may allow for better absorption and utilisation of the nutrients it contains. BUT, we get that sometimes feeding twice per day is not possible. If this is the situation you are in, you can feed the full Maintenance Serve in one meal per day. If using the Stress Serve, it should be divided and fed in two meals.

What Is The Feed Rate, how long will my Digestive EQ last?

Here are the feeding rates and estimated time a 4kg sachet or tub will last:

  • 45 gm per day for  up to 200kg, making 4KG pack worth 89 serves.
  • 95 gm for 200kg to 400kg has a daily serve of 95 gm per day (42 serves)
  • 400-600kg has a daily serve of 130 gm per day (31 serves)
  • Over 600kg have a daily serve of 195 gm per day (20.5 serves)

How quickly will I see the results?

I wish we could give you a definitive answer. Every gut, microbiome and conditions are different. Some may show results in days, whereas others can take multiple months. On average, most see a noticeable difference after one month at full serve.

Many of the conditions our animals are experiencing have taken a while to develop so with our products we are not aiming for a quick fix but a complete approach that can take time to create change.

My horse doesn't like it, how can I feed it?

First step is always going back to just using a pinch, a sprinkle and gradually increase. Other tips for feeding:

  • Add to a liquid to a liquid first then add to feed. Apple cider vinegar, or tea or chamomile or fenugreek or peppermint.
  • Add to damp feed such as beet fibre then add to feed or feed with the beet fibre first.
  • If only feeding pallets, wet the pellets and add to make a slurry
  • Lastly, in extreme cases, you can add to water and syringe directly into the horse's mouth.

I can see some pieces of leaf, long stems, is it normal?

It's all natural! 🌿 We use lucerne leaf meal as a base, avoiding artificial fillers. Seasonal changes may affect its appearance, but any lucerne you see means it's safe and quality-assured. Made in government accredited facilities, we're committed to high standards.
